Planning to study abroad? Every country has its own student visa or residence permit system. Below you’ll find a quick but complete guide to student visas for each destination we cover, plus links to official government/immigration websites.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom – Student Visa (formerly Tier 4)

Main visa type

  • Student visa (for degree-level + language courses > 11 months)
  • Child Student visa (independent schools, age 4–17) GOV.UK+ 

Basic requirements

  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor (university/college)
  • Proof of funds (tuition + living cost, amount depends on city & course length)
  • English language proof (IELTS/other) if required
  • TB test & police certificate for some countries
  • Paid Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

Application steps (simplified)

  • Get unconditional offer and your CAS number.
  • Prepare documents (bank statements, passport, TB test, etc.).
  • Apply online, pay visa fee + IHS.
  • Book biometrics appointment or use ID Check app (in some countries).
  • Wait for decision, then travel with visa vignette / BRP instructions

Work rights

Usually up to 20 hours/week in term-time on degree level courses, full-time in vacations (if institution is eligible).

🇨🇦 Canada – Study Permit

Main visa type

  • Study permit (not a “visa” itself, but required to study > 6 months). Canada+1

Basic requirements

  • Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Proof of funds (tuition + living expenses)
  • Upfront medical exam (for some countries/programs)
  • Police certificate in some cases
  • Biometrics

Steps

  • Get LOA from a DLI.
  • Create IRCC account and apply online.
  • Upload forms, LOA, proof of funds, passport, photos, etc.
  • Give biometrics at VAC.
  • Receive Port of Entry (POE) letter and TRV/eTA; final study permit is printed at airport.

🇺🇸 USA – F-1 / M-1 Student Visas

Main visa types

  • F-1 visa – academic programs, universities, colleges, language school
  • M-1 visa – vocational/non-academic programs Travel State+1

Basic requirements 

  • I-20 form from a SEVP-approved school
  • Non-immigrant intent (ties to home country)
  • Demonstrate funds for first year
  • Pay SEVIS I-901 fee

Steps

  • Get accepted and receive Form I-20.
  • Pay SEVIS fee.
  • Complete DS-160 (online visa form).
  • Book visa interview at U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
  • Attend interview with documents (I-20, financials, ties, etc.).
  • If approved, get visa stamped and travel; status is managed by SEVISICE+1

🇦🇺 Australia – Student Visa (subclass 500)

Main visa type

Basic requirements 

  • CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) from Australian provider
  • Proof of funds & GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) statement
  • English language test (if required)
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Steps

  • Enrol and get CoE.
  • Create ImmiAccount and apply online.
  • Upload documents, health exam, police checks.
  • Wait for visa grant notice.

🇩🇪 Germany – National Visa / Residence Permit for Studies

Main routes

Basic requirements 

  • Admission/conditional admission from a German university
  • Proof of funds (often via blocked account)
  • Health insurance
  • Basic German/English (depending on program)

Steps

  • Apply for D-visa for study at German mission in your country.
  • Enter Germany, register address & get health insurance card.
  • Apply for residence permit for study at local Foreigners’ Office.
